Neighbourhood Watch meeting 7.30 tonight (17 Nov)

Community constable Hermien Kok is running a short meeting in the Greenhithe Community Hall tonight (Mon 17 November) at 7.30 to discuss setting up Neighbourhood Watch programmes.
She is planning to keep it short and sweet, so send some along from your family if you value the security of your property and safety of your children.

Greenhithe Residents News - Pancake Breakfast and more

Tonight the Tauhinu Scouts have delivered a pamphlet reminding you of the Pancake Breakfast this coming Sunday morning 9 November. This is one of the great social events of the year in Greenhithe. The food is well made and prepared by the endeavour of scouts and their supportive parents. Please support this event to help the Scouts to purchase much needed equipment.

8 November - Election Day - Please get out and vote thoughtfully. People in other countries have given their lives fighting for the privilege of voting.

16 November - Village Market - Along with the usual stalls, local resident and natural glowista Suzanne Paul will be signing copies of her book, "But Wait There's More."

22 November - Open Mike night - The Greenhithe Jammers invite anyone who can sing or play to an open mike night. Otherwise, just come for the entertainment.

Greenhithe Playgroup - Every Thursday 9.30-11.30 in the Greenhithe Community Hall - parents and caregivers with children 0-5 are welcome. Pregnant mums welcome to come along for a chat too.

Alien Vegetation:

Council has informed us that they don't have the resources to fight gorse and other weeds, so these are our responsibility to eradicate.

My personal pet hate is Pampas Grass, which is a nasty invasive alien. It looks a lot like toe toe, so how do you tell the difference?
1. If it has just started flowering (spring) and has nice droopy heads, it is toe toe
2. If not, it is probably pampas grass and should be sprayed out.
3. If you can break the leaves easily when you tug, it is probably pampas grass (spray!)
4. If it has erect flowers (summer flowering) it is pampas grass (spray!)

There are lovely toe toe around the pond on Greenhithe Rd. There are many Pampas Grass down Rame Rd and in many other parts of Greenhithe. Most iconic photos and artworks are actually Pampas Grass too!

Halloween events in and around Greenhithe

Greenhithe Professionals

As usual we are once again holding our Annual Trick and Treat evening at our office, 9 Greenhithe Rd, Greenhithe this Friday 31st October from 5.00 - 7.30pm There will be a sausage sizzle, $1.50 each and proceeds going to Child Cancer. We have a room set aside for the children to enter and have some fun, with bags of treats. We expect huge numbers, its very colourful with lots of children attending, all dressed up of course.

Green Bean

Pizza and Pasta night at the Green Bean Friday the 31st October. The Haunted Green Bean will be open for Halloween. Come and enjoy some great food and our special childrens menu. Their will be lots of trick and treats. Please phone if you wish to book a table on 4139322.

Westfield Albany Fireworks

It's our first birthday on 1st November and to celebrate we are kicking off with a Fireworks Extravaganza on Friday night 31st October.
From 4.00pm there will be entertainment in The Plaza. Shrek will be here with his famous Christmas Show as will Scooby Doo.
There will be shows on the hour with the characters roaming amongst the crowds between times so you can get your photo taken with them.
Bugs Bunny will also be here in his top hat and tails to help light our giant Christmas tree at around 8.45pm followed by a spectacular Fireworks Show over the Albany lakes.

Kumeu Fireworks

Taupaki School is holding a "Monster Fireworks Display" on Friday at the Kumeu Showgrounds. Entertainment starts at 5 with the fireworks scheduled for 8.30. Ticket prices are $6 for children, $12 adults or $30 for a carload (2 adults, 2 children)

An increasing part of Halloween in NZ is ‘Trick or Treat’. We encourage families to put safe boundaries around this by making sure children only go to the homes of people they know and only under adult supervision. Please also take the opportunity to reinforce the use of appropriate manners, especially “please” and “thank you”.

I can highly recommend the Pancake Breakfast on Sunday the 9th. This is a great social occasion, and the major annual fundraiser for the Scout Group. So you are supporting the youth of Greenhithe.

With summer coming along, thoughts turn to getting fit. Fresh this month is Spin Classes in Greenhithe. Classes are conveniently located near the school and timed to fit around busy schedules. Take a look at the spin class web page and find a session that suits.

News:

Now that the Election day has been announced (8 November) it is time to get to know the MPs and the party policies. We have decided to join up with the Herald Island Residents and Ratepayers Association, so the Meet the Candidates evening is at Whenuapai School Hall (next to Pinepac) on 6 October. MP John Key is confirmed for that event. More details to follow on the web site as they are available.

It is not often that the wheels of democracy roll into our town, so if there is anything council-related that you would like to see in the long-term plan, come along and be heard. Don't forget to use the web site to check up on news and events, buy/sell things (there's even a house for sale), check for babysitters, see what community groups are doing, and discuss whatever you feel like discussing. Greenhithe Tennis Club Open Day

From The Residents and Ratepayers Association

AGM: 8 July, 7.30pm at the Old School Building, Collins Park

The Greenhithe Residents, Ratepayers and Community Hall Association looks after the collective interests of the Greenhithe Community through liaison with and submissions to Local Government, Government and other bodies such as Transit and the NZ Police. It maintains our major community assets, being the Village Hall (through its committee) and the Old School Building (with the Lions Club). It also established the greenhithe.org.nz website and this email newsletter, both of which are proving useful to residents and businesses.

There is a main committee and subcommittees for specific projects or interest areas, including the Hall, Whenuapai, Early Childhood and Planning. New and existing members are welcome to attend the AGM. For enquiries or to register your interest to be on a committee or subcommittee please contact info@greenhithe.org.nz or visit www.greenhithe.org.nz

Community Coordinator

We are looking for someone to fill a paid role to promote the usage of the web site and email in the community. The role will involve working with community organisations to help them use online communication effectively. If you are an effective internet user, perhaps have some marketing or communications background and are well connected in the community then please let us know at info@greenhithe.org.nz. This is not a technical role.

Blogs

We have set up a facility for any interest group to write a ‘blog’ on the web site. This is simply an easy way for groups to informally write their own stories or news, perhaps with pictures too. So far, the school and fire brigade’s stories have been converted to the blog format.
