For those of you who enjoy politics the old fashioned way, there will be a public meeting to meet our Helensville candidates this Wednesday evening. Our Prime Minister, The Rt Hon John Key, MP for Helensville, will be one of the five candidates. I understand that no List or Maori seat candidates are invited to speak. The meeting is being organised by the Hobsonville/West Harbour Residents and Ratepayers Association, and is open to all. From a resident: Today, 19th August I was running home from pony club and discovered two big piles of grass clippings from a mower which the horses were happily munching on. <div> I was wondering if you could please circulate an email around your contacts to please let them know the dangers of feeding grass clippings to horses. Even in small amounts, grass clippings can give horses severe colic and even be fatal within an hour or two. When horses get colic they roll around and twist their organs which will kill them before they can get to surgery in Takanini. </div> <div>   I understand that the person who did this was trying to be thoughtful by giving the horses some nice grass. </div> <div>   Thanks very much. </div>

Motorway opening 6/7 August

The new Hobsonville motorway will be accessible to pedestrians and cyclists for a limited time on Saturday 6 August. The motorway will open up overnight and should be all 'go' on Sunday. It would be good to see as many people as possible turn out with a spade and gumboots to plant natives. It appears to be a tight programme between midday and 3pm - you won't be allowed on after 1.30 as a pedestrian or 2.30 as a cyclist. The Ratepayers Assoc Committee has started up again after this month's informative AGM. First order of business is to attend a Local Board planning workshop on Tuesday 2nd August. There has been a number of legitimate complaints recently relating to forum posts on the <a target="_blank" style="color: rgb(7, 77, 143); " href="http://www.greenhithe.org.nz/portal/discuss">greenhithe.org.nz</a> web site -- some with legal implications and others just bemoaning the poor quality of posts. We (the Ratepayers Committee who owns the site) have had to take action and remove some discussion threads, which really is tiresome and negates the point of having had the discussion in the first place. Because of this, we have decided that the forums should be member-only, ie, you need to register on the site and log in before posting. You can still go 'incognito' if you prefer, using an alias rather than your actual full name. The alias will be registered against a real email address though, so that the Site Admin can contact you. No-one else will be able to discover your email address.  If you forget your user name or password, you don't need to ask me for a reminder... there is a link adjacent to the login link marked 'forgot' where you can find it again using your email address. There is also a feature on the login form to reset your password if you have forgotten it.  I hope this works out well. The AGM for the Greenhithe Residents, Ratepayers and Community Hall Association is on Tuesday 5th July, at the Old School Building on Collins Park at 7.30pm. Topics and guest speakers will include John Stewart from Neighbourhood Support (aka Neighbourhood Watch) and Noel Rugg about Hobsonville Future Planning which will be interesting to all of us. If you haven't already done so, please bring along $15 per household for the annual subs. You can also pay online. We do most things via email, and it's a great opportunity to understand more about what makes Council tick and through advocacy, how we can enhance the values of our properties and lifestyles. One of our current focuses it to re-engage with the new Auckland Council and Auckland Transport to ensure that previous plans are started.

If you check the <a href="http://www.greenhithe.org.nz/portal">Greenhithe.org.nz</a> website from time-to-time you may notice that there is a Facebook page linked to on the left of the screen. This can also be got at through <a href="http://www.facebook.com/GreenhitheNZ">www.facebook.com/GreenhitheNZ</a> In future I will use that more and more as a medium as it seems to suit how people are choosing to communicate with the website taking a back seat. If you are a facebook user and have 'Liked' the page, you can post to it. There are also discussion forums, although nobody has started using them yet. There are still discussion forums on the greenhithe.org.nz site. I wanted to ask your opinion on something though -- do you value the classifieds section of the website? Frankly, it is hardly used and is a piece of software that causes me grief and is limiting the upgrade path for the website. If you have a view please reply with your answer. Also let me know if you have a view either way on website vs Facebook. I believe though that we will always have some form of greenhithe.org.nz to fill in the gaps and act as an archive. I am also aware that content posted to Facebook becomes the propoerty of Facebook, so we need to be a bit careful about retaining our own rights where that is important (but it carries a cost).
