Greenhithe Volunteer Fire Brigade News December 2010

It’s the last edition of the year and I’m sure everyone is preparing for the summer holiday season.  Please do have a safe summer and remember…

BBQ safety
•    Before using a grill, check the connection between the gas tank and the fuel line
•    Do not add fluid to an already lit fire because the flames can flashback up into the container and explode
•    Dispose of hot coals properly – douse them with plenty of water and stir them to ensure that the fire is out.  Never place them in plastic, paper or wooden containers
•    Never grill/barbecue in enclosed areas – carbon monoxide could be produced which is very dangerous and can kill

Christmas FireWise
•    Select a place in your house that is away from busy areas, stairs and doors – secure the tree so it can not be knocked over by children or pets
•    If your tree becomes dry and starts shedding needles you should remove it from the house
•    Check that your artificial tree is made from flame resistant materials
•    Lights should never be used on artificial trees with metal frames
•    All tree ornaments should be flame resistant
•    Never use candles near the Christmas tree or as tree decorations
•    Check/test your Christmas lights carefully before placing them on the tree.  If any of the wires are frayed or broken, throw them out and buy a new set of lights
•    Make sure all the connections are tight and that the bulbs/cords are in good condition.  Loose connections and frayed cords can cause a short circuit.
•    Never leave the tree lights on overnight or when leaving the house

In brigade news this month…our Christmas lights will be on from Wednesday 1 December.  Bring the kids and enjoy the melodies and lights of a Bright Christmas.  We wish to thank the Greenhithe Community for the terrific support you provide us and hope you all have and wonderful and safe Christmas/New Year break.

Concluding word…there's no telling what tomorrow will bring.
