Cycle to win along new cycle path

The new shared cycle path and footpath along East Coast Road from Constellation Drive to Forrest Hill Road is now ready to use, and to celebrate the council is holding a month-long promotion. Cyclists using the path from April 8 to May 8 can have the chance to win a $200 bike shop voucher and other prizes. The new East Coast Road shared cycle path and footpath is part of the council’s Share with Care programme that encourages walking and cycling. More

ANZAC Day Services

Citizens have been invited to participate in commemorative services to be held on ANZAC Day, Sunday 25 April 2010. Activities will be held at Devonport, Takapuna, East Coast Bays, Northcote, Birkenhead, Albany and Glenfield. More

Keeping Children Safe in Cars

A new booster seat campaign aimed at parents and young children has been delivering in-car safety messages to North Shore schools. The campaign (which includes discount vouchers) features a large rooster mascot and a singing group to educate children about the safety benefits of using their booster seats. Car crashes are one of the biggest dangers to young children. More

Calling all composters

The North Shore City Council starts its popular composting workshops again shortly. The programme aims to teach residents how to compost organic waste and to help the city meet targets of saving nearly 50 per cent of rubbish going to landfill sites. More

Youthtown opens North Shore Branch

North Shore has become the location of the newest branch of Youthtown. The new facility was opened by His Worship the Mayor Andrew Williams last week and will provide young people with opportunities for physical, social and creative experiences. More

Iconic Pump House chimney receives life saving intervention

 

The historic Lake Pupuke pump house chimney which has been a feature of Takapuna’s landscape for more than a hundred years is getting life saving repairs. The iconic structure is getting structural strengthening and remedial brick work and will soon look great and be better conditioned against earthquake damage. The pump house buildings are owned by North Shore City and have a category 1 Historic Places Trust classification. More

Graffiti education programme promotes tag-free kiwis

A new programme aimed at reducing graffiti in North Shore City by encouraging young people to explore other ways they can express their creativity, has been launched by the North Shore City Council and New Zealand Police. More

Restoration of Lucas Creek nears completion

Lucas Creek on the outskirts of the Albany Centre in Oteha Valley will be reopened to the public shortly, after a major redevelopment designed to restore the stream and its surroundings to a more natural state. Public access has been enhanced, erosion damage repaired, extensive planting completed and changes made to the waterway to encourage wildlife, fish and eels. More

Oxfam Water Challenge makes a splash

Staff from water organisations across the Auckland region got together recently to compete in a corporate challenge to raise much needed funds for Oxfam’s Water for Survival Programme.  The day was a huge success. More

This project is progressing well and is expected to be finished on time at the end of April. More

Onewa Road Improvements Stage 2
Physical works on the second and final stage of improving Onewa Road between Lake Road and Sylvan Avenue have begun. More

East Coast Road Upgrade: Hastings to Rosedale Road
Work has started on upgrading East Coast Road to meet safety concerns for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers of motor vehicles and residents. More

Soap Box Derby
The North Shore Soap Box Derby held in Glenfield on Saturday 10 April will be the culmination of the Auckland region’s derby races, featuring enthusiastic children between 10 and 16 years of age.  All drivers in the derby will represent their schools and must build their soap box super stock car from a kitset. More

Ocean Swim Series
Don’t miss out on the Sovereign NZ King of the Bays swim, from Milford to Takapuna, on Saturday 17 April.  This is the last event in the Sovereign NZ Ocean Swim series, but the event also boasts several ‘firsts’.  A Polynesian dance and music group, Te Pua Inano, will perform from a man-made floating island, just off the coast of Thorne Bay in Takapuna.  The island is a North Shore City Council initiative and will also serve as a floating drinks station for thirsty competitors. More

The Man Whose Mother Was A Pirate
Now showing at the Pumphouse Theatre until 17 April, Margaret Mahy’s funny pirate adventure makes for a brilliant family outing. The Man Whose Mother was a Pirate tells the story of Sam, an ordinary man, whose mother is extraordinary – she’s a pirate who yearns to see the sea again. A wonderful and madcap adventure ensues. By Margaret Mahy, adapted by Tim Bray and songs by Christine White. More

Sculpture Festival 2010
Lake House Arts Centre invites residents to Sculpture festival 2010 for adults and children. Following a week of residential wood carving programmes, a Sculpture Have-A-Go and Market Day will be held on Sunday 18 April 2010, and will include sculpture workshops, live clay-raku firing and Have-A-Go on a potters wheel. More
