Your Council

Mayor Andrew Williams with members of the Royal Commission

Local government restructuring plans announced: The Government has announced its plans to restructure local government in Auckland. In summary, it intends to set up a powerful Auckland-wide Council led by a single mayor and supplemented by 20 to 30 community boards. The North Shore City Council has agreed that it has a responsibility to work with Government appointees, Minister Rodney Hide, and with its fellow Auckland councils to implement the new structure. During the change process the council will actively represent the needs and values of North Shore residents and ratepayers, as well as working co-operatively for the good of the wider Auckland region. However the council has expressed some concerns about the plan, which is a major departure from the model favoured by the Royal Commission. More information

City queries RMA amendments: North Shore City Council has applauded the Government’s attempts to simplify and streamline the Resource Management Act, but believes many of the amendments proposed will further complicate and delay the consents process. City rejects private water idea: North Shore City Council has strongly opposed any moves to privatise the city’s or the Auckland region’s water supply and wastewater disposal systems.
