Dear Residents,
Tauhinu Sea Scout Group Proposed Boat Storage Facility
The Tauhinu Sea Scout Group is about to apply to the Auckland City Council for a resource consent to build a boat storage facility that will adjoin our headquarters (the ‘Ship’) in Rahui Road, Greenhithe. The extension will provide a storage facility for boats and equipment, improved access and our own toilet (we presently use the adjacent Council toilets) specifically designed for our handicapped members. Since my previous letter, we have progressed planning to the point where we now need to formally move forward with the application process, hence this more detailed package. You can download a copy of the draft plans for the proposed extension of the ‘Ship’ in Rahui Road here.
Tauhinu Sea Scouts has been long established in Greenhithe, North Shore since the 1950’s and is registered within the Mahurangi, North Island Region of Scouting New Zealand. The Group recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary and was recognised, at a special awards ceremony attended by the Royal New Zealand Navy Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral David Ledson, as offering superior Sea Scout Group management. Tauhinu Sea Scouts has established itself over the years by consistently ranking near the top at both regional and national boating regattas. The Group is considered an integral part of the Greenhithe community and is perhaps best known for its Pancake Breakfast fund raiser held annually in the community hall.
The group owns several boats and trailers, all of which are presently stored in temporary sheds located on the old Hobsonville air base. Unfortunately, we have been advised that we shall have to vacate the premises by 31st January 2011, as the land development intensifies in the area. If the Group is unable to find a new home for its boats then we will be forced to leave them parked in the unsecure driveways of our own members where they will be exposed to the weather elements. With more than $100,000 in boating assets this is not an ideal situation and will lead to a rapid deterioration of our equipment and increased maintenance costs.
The Group committee has investigated a number of possible storage options and concluded the best option is to extend our present headquarters in Rahui Road (the ‘Ship’) by building a storage facility onto the side of the present structure, between the south side and the existing boat ramp. Whilst

this may not be the cheapest option for the Group, it is the most desirable, as it allows easy access to boats and equipment and would better utilise the adjacent boat ramp (although it needs to be dredged) if sailing.
The next step in the application process is to apply for a resource consent to extend our headquarters on the Coastal Marine Area and reserve land and to seek the written approval of affected persons. Resource consent applications are classified as non-notified, publically notified or of limited notification. The Group has contacted all affected parties seeking their approval prior to submitting the application.
If you have any queries then please do not hesitate to contact me by phone or e-mail. We look forward to the support of the Greenhithe community in our endeavours to provide improved scouting facilities for the youth of Greenhithe and surrounding areas.
Yours sincerely,
Glen Sycamore
