Why Businesses Struggle Here

Posted by Anonymous at June 11. 2009
We run a modest Bed and Breakfast and anytime anyone visits from overseas they adore being here in lovely Greenhithe. When people ask in general "Where do you live?" and the response is "Greenhithe" they always go "Oh you are so lucky" - which is true. However, when I seek to promote my business to Kiwis who are themselves in the travel sector they perceive Greenhithe as being in the boonies and not a good tourist destination or easily accessed. Well guess what we have close at hand motorway access, we are at the Gateway to the North, minutes away by car is an efficient new bus station serviced by the Northern Express. It takes me minutes to walk to water views and in Summer a great little beach. We have parks and reserves and Molly of Greenhithe to visit. We now have shops and cafes etc.

A recent and lengthy trip to Europe opened our eyes to how wonderful it is here by compare.

If someone has an appreciation of the bigger picture on how we (Greenhithan business folk) can change people's perception of Greenhithe as a place to visit be that for a daytrip or to come and buy products and services we would be interested to hear. Thank you.

Would the community support Dante's Woodfired Pizza currently located in small-town Huapai? This is a 'destination' pizzeria with people travelling from all over NZ to try their pizzas. Won many awards for their pizzas. Owners looking at possibility of moving business & house to Greenhithe. www.dantespizza.co.nz

Business' usually 'struggle' in Greenhithe because it is solely based on 'word of mouth'... A business HAS to be brilliant to survive... There is no 'through' traffic, so cater to what's here - people will come if it is top notch because people 'here' (in the 'Hithe') will recommend it....

The Ratepayers Assoc is considering supporting the establishment of a 'Greenhithe Business Association' if there is demand for it. Ths is more likely to be something of value to retail-type businesses than home businesses, but no limits at this stage -- it's still just an idea. If you think there is merit in this idea please post your thoughts here or email info@greenhithe.org.nz

Thanks, Barry.
