Looking for descendants of Madeleine Irwin

Posted by Greenhithe Editor at May 11. 2010

I leave in Nice (France). One of my ancestors was Madeleine Irwin, born Madeleine Maillard in France.

She was the mother of two daughters : Viviane and Jacqueline Irwin.

Madeleine Irwin is the author of a pamphlet, "If I Were New Zealand’s Dictator" which is in the collections of your National libraries (Mac Millan Brown Library sent me gracefully a PDF copy of the text.) which is ending by the mention : Greenhithe, Auckland, 1935.

Do you know something about the descendents of Madeleine Irwin in your town ?

Thank you,

Katy Remy

Hello Katy,
A local publication, "Tauhinu, ~ A History of Greenhithe, by R.(Ray) E. King," makes reference to a Madeleine Irwin, an early settler of Greenhithe, Auckland, New Zealand. (pages 77 - 78 )

This lady has a maiden name that differs from that which you have given, but there are marked similarities.

A summary from the publication:

This Mrs Irwin was born Madeleine Coche.

Madeleine was educated in Paris. She mastered five languages and studied Town Planning, Economics, History and Finance. She visited many countries, in order to improve her understanding of the languages.
At age 23yrs. Madeleine decided to leave home and travel the world, eventually choosing to settle in NZ.
Initially, in NZ, Madeleine taught as a French Teacher at a girls school in Mt Eden, a suburb of Auckland City. ( around 1920 - 1925 )
Madeleine married a Mr Stanley Irwin, ( date not given ) who was in the shipping business. They bought property on Whangaparoa Peninsula, - to the North of Auckland, later sold.
They subsequently purchased "Tauhinu Park", the Greenhithe property of Eric Graig, another early settler here.

Quote:
"Mrs Irwin was a very tall woman, and with her majestic bearing.etc. ..."

This is accompanied by a photograph of Madeleine Irwin. (Head and sholders)

It goes on to state that, in 1947, the Irwins sold the property and moved to Auckland.

It further states that:

Mrs Irwin died 10 April 1961 when in her eighties. Her husband, Stanley died on 26 January 1969.

There is no mention of any children.
A brief search of local cemetery records does not show any references to either Madeleine or Stanley Irwin.
Google notes references to Madeleine Coche and Madeleine Irwin referred to in the above referenced publication. The references tie in with Madeleine's academic achievements and other interests. See also Coche Falls.
Unfortunately, the reference publication is long out of print.

Do you have any photographs of the lady that you are enquiring about?

If so, perhaps you could send a copy of same to Editor / Webmaster at Greenhithe Portal, to be compared with the photo in the referenced publication.

(I do not have capability to scan the reference, and there may be copyright issues here, so cannot produce a copy at this time.)

The New Zealand Whitepages has one reference to Irwin in Greenhithe.

Hope this is useful.

Cheers,
D

Unfortunately, this book is long since out of print, but is sometimes available through

D - Ray King has given me permission to publish the book electronically on the site so there are no copyright issues if you want to.

Hello. Thank you very much for your answer. Yes she his my ancestor !I made a mistake. Maillard is the name of her mother.

I give you the list :
Jacques Coche was the foundator of a fabrik of porcelaine in Ixelles (, Bruxelles, Belgia). He has towo sons : Jean-Jacques and Nicolas.
Jean-Jacques married to Mlle Mommens
They had a daughter (Marie Chantal Coche who married Ernest Vermeeren and a son, Jean Coche who married in 1840 Emma Louise Désirée Maillard in Paris (Montmartre)
They had 4 daughters : Marthe (+ Louis Demeuldre) they continued the fabrik of porcelaine (no child); Suzanne + Etienne Ovigneur (they lived in the North of France and had 4 children; Madeleine who married S. Irwin) ; Pauline Jeanne who married Charles Fumière and had two children.
Pauline and Charles are my direct ancestors. Their son, Pierre was my grand-father.
I have two photos of the landscape around their home ion NZ.
If you give me your email I'll send to you some scan of ancient photos.
I am certain that she had two daughters named Viviane and Jacqueline.
